On her 17th debut anniversary, Sooyoung hilariously shared her true feelings about having less screen time and parts in SNSD. Why didn’t she become the group’s center?
On Sept. 9th, the Ep. 1 of the YouTube web show, “Hey, Come Here” Season 2, was posted on the channel led by Super Junior Donghae and Eunhyuk.
On this day, Sooyoung appeared as a special guest, and the three recalled their memories as former SM Entertainment artists.
In particular, the K-pop idols dished on how line distribution works under the label, and how the center part was given to certain members, instead of having a rotational system.
Donghae revealed:
“When you form a group, the positions are critical. We had our positions clearly defined.”
Sooyoung agreed that it was the same case for Girls’ Generation and mentioned the famous “Bermuda Triangle” YoonA, Yuri, and Seohyun as the group’s fixed center.
However, as for Sooyoung, she wasn’t given such a role and explained:
“But I didn’t have anything like that. I didn’t know about center positions. I guess I didn’t realize it was important. And I didn’t think it mattered either. I thought I could work hard at the edges.”

However, as the group continued, she initially thought it wasn’t just that the other members were not given their chance and expressed frustration in a lighthearted way, saying:
“They stayed the same… I wondered if I could get a chance, too. Now, I’ve got my own moves, too. Like in ‘Genie,’ I could do something like that. There’s no reason I couldn’t.
But since it’s been set for a long time, who doesn’t know? Who doesn’t know how pretty YoonA is? They could rotate things a bit. They could give someone else a chance. Since everyone already knows she’s pretty.”
The SNSD member also continued to talk about her having less screen time and said:
“I thought, couldn’t I get a little more screen time, like 3 seconds?”

However, when she looked back, Sooyoung realized that it was for the team, and YoonA is indeed unrivaled. She tried to focus on singing position, but Taeyeon came. When she leaned toward dancing, Hyoyeon was also there.
As the topic went on, Sooyoung recalled the time she fought really hard to have more parts during line distribution on their 7th year, the “Lion Heart” era.
She asked the A&R team if she could sing the entire song to help them assess which parts would suit her. Although she was embarrassed, she gave her best only to gain a disappointing result.
“When I heard it back, I thought I did pretty well. But then they gave me my part, and it was the rap part. Looking back, I think the parts had already been decided from the start. At least I gave it a shot.”
