On April 10, a press conference for tvN’s new Saturday-Sunday drama “Resident Playbook” (written by Kim Song-hee, directed by Lee Min-soo) was held at the Grand Ballroom of Ramada Hotel in Sindorim, Guro-gu, Seoul. Creator Shin Won-ho, director Lee Min-soo, actors Go Youn-jung, Shin Si-ah, Kang You-seok, Han Ye-ji and Jung Joon-won attended and shared insights about the drama.

“Resident Playbook” follows the hospital lives and turbulent friendships of young obstetrics and gynaecology residents who proudly enter the unpopular department in an era of low birth rates. The series is a spin-off of the hit medical drama “Hospital Playlist”.
Unlike the original series, this installment draws special attention for choosing obstetrics and gynecology as its main backdrop. It spans both obstetrics the specialty of Professor Yang Seok-hyeong (played by Kim Dae-myung) and gynecology, which is rarely highlighted in dramas, offering a wider range of stories.
At the event, director Lee Min-soo explained, “Since it’s a spin-off, we wanted to carry over some elements from the original series while also showing something new. It’s still Yulje Medical Center, but we gave it a twist by creating a setting in Jongno Yulje Branch, located slightly apart from the main one.”
He added, “Though the characters are doctors, they’re not highly skilled professors but clumsy residents. So while maintaining the tone of ‘Hospital Playlist’, we aimed to bring a different kind of fun.”

So why choose obstetrics and gynecology? Director Lee elaborated, “I didn’t know much before working on this project, but OB/GYN includes obstetrics, which deals with childbirth, and gynecology, which handles diseases. It’s a mysterious space where new life is born on one side, while on the other, someone might be saying goodbye to a loved one due to illness.”
He continued, “That contrast fits well with the coming-of-age narrative of these young residents. It allowed for a wide variety of interesting and emotional episodes to unfold.”
tvN’s new Saturday-Sunday drama “Resident Playbook” premieres on April 12 at 9:10 PM KST.
