On the March 10 episode of “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” BLACKPINK’s Jennie opened up about her journey to becoming a global pop star and how she unexpectedly ended up as a rapper in the group.
When asked if she had always dreamed of being a pop star, Jennie reflected on her early aspirations: “I knew I wanted to be in the music industry, but I didn’t really know what being a pop star meant at the time. The stage looked so beautiful and glamorous, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be in the spotlight or if I just wanted to create shows like that. But I definitely wanted to be part of it.”
Jennie trained for six years before debuting with BLACKPINK, a period she described as both long and transformative. Looking back on her trainee days, she shared: “I don’t even know where to start, but back then, it felt like a really long time. I kept wondering when I would finally step into the world as an artist. Looking back now, I realize it was like going to school to become a pop star. We trained at an academy every day, taking various vocal lessons, dance lessons, and even foreign language classes – basically learning how to be a superstar.”
With BLACKPINK’s highly anticipated third world tour set to begin this summer, Jennie remained tight-lipped about what fans can expect. Playfully dodging the question, she laughed and said, “I can’t say anything! Don’t ask me.” However, she did leave a little teaser, adding, “We’re preparing a lot of things, so you’ll just have to come and see for yourself.”
One of Jennie’s trademarks is her ability to command the stage with an intense and charismatic presence – something that contrasts with her softer, more reserved personality in daily life. When asked about this transformation, she admitted that even she doesn’t fully understand how it happens: “To be honest, I still haven’t figured out the secret behind it. I don’t really know what switches me into that mode, but it just feels like it’s inside me. When I hear music or focus, it naturally happens. It’s a talent I’m truly grateful for, and I love that part of myself.”
During the interview, Jennifer Hudson also inquired about Jennie’s rapping ability, asking whether it was a natural talent. In response, Jennie revealed a surprising backstory about how she became BLACKPINK’s rapper: “It’s actually a funny story. When I was a trainee, I was one of the only members who could speak English fluently. Since we covered songs from all over the world, someone needed to do the fast-talking parts.”
She continued, “That’s how I ended up becoming a rapper. It started for a funny reason, but over time, I really grew to enjoy rapping.”
Jennie’s natural confidence and effortless rap delivery have since become an integral part of BLACKPINK’s signature style, proving that sometimes, the most unexpected paths can lead to incredible success.
