# Are women just ‘mothers’ or ‘non-mothers’?
It is true that the number of female characters has increased compared to Season 1, and their character traits have become somewhat more diverse. However, the high-profile female characters are mostly divided into categories like ‘mother,’ ‘someone who is about to become a mother,’ or ‘someone who was a mother in the past,’ which is a bit disappointing.
Characters like Geumja (played by Kang Aesim), who secretly participates in a game to help her gambling-addicted son, only to face the son as a fellow participant; Junhee (played by Jo Yuri), who loses everything due to her boyfriend’s betrayal and is on the verge of becoming a single mother; and Noeul (played by Park Gyuyoung), a defector and former soldier who left her young daughter in North Korea and doesn’t even know if she’s alive, all fall into the category of ‘motherhood.’ In this light, the characters from the previous season, such as Han Minyeo (played by Kim Juryeong), who showed a variety of faces from a bat to kimchi, and Kang Saebyeok (played by Jeong Hoyeon), one of the final three participants who formed a life-and-death friendship with another contestant, seem to deserve higher praise in a relative evaluation.
In contrast, the character of Hyeonju (played by Park Seonghoon), a man from a special forces background who participates in the game for gender confirmation surgery, is portrayed with more complexity. He is in a position where he cannot clearly identify as either female or male, but his character stands out because he plays a role in both the female and male spheres. Even if his full story unfolds as the plot reaches its conclusion, the fact that the women’s narratives all show the same traits is, to this point, the only disappointing aspect of the human characters depicted in Squid Game 2.
