“Two Baeksang Nominations” This Korean Drama Is Back in the Spotlight After International Praise

Premiered on November 29 last year, “Family Matters” tells the story of a mother with the unique ability to edit memories at will, who teams up with her family to give villains a taste of hell. Upon release, it was praised as one of the most talked-about series of the year thanks to its never-before-seen concept and the actors’ standout performances.

The Series Mania Festival is Europe’s most prestigious festival for TV series, known for spotlighting globally noteworthy shows. “Family Matters” was the only Korean drama officially invited to the International Panorama Competition section.

At its European premiere, the series was met with enthusiastic reactions from jurors and audiences alike. Critics raved, “A storyline that shakes up the grammar of its genre”, “A brilliant black comedy unraveling the complexities of modern family life” and “A masterwork that cleverly exposes contradictions between characters’ surfaces and inner selves, keeping viewers on edge to the end.”

Additionally, “Family Matters” earned two nominations at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards in the TV category: Best Screenplay (Kim Jung-min) and Best Supporting Actress (Kim Gook-hee).

Actress Kim Gook-hee left a lasting impression playing Oh Gil-ja, a church deacon who appears ordinary but hides a dark villainous side. She portrayed both the chilling menace and the deceptive normalcy of her character with nuance and intensity.

In an interview with News1 last December, Kim Gook-hee shared her thoughts on the role, “It took a toll on me emotionally. You have to imagine everything so specifically—it was tough. Some say playing a villain is cathartic, but maybe because the character was so evil, I found it difficult.”

She added, “Afterward, I played a warmer role, which helped me heal a bit. Saying lines that could comfort someone gave me peace.”

Meanwhile, the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards will be broadcast on May 5 at 8 PM KST.
