Upcoming K-Drama ‘Villain’s Country’ Sparks Controversy for Bizarre Take on ‘Modern Family’ Remake

The Korean adaptation of “Modern Family,” dubbed “Villain’s Country,” a new drama lined up for KBS, is already inciting controversy after its synopsis went viral.

This has sparked disappointment and hot debates on social media, as many netizens are questioning the legitimacy of this remake being tied to a beloved series.

Starring Oh Na Ra (SKY Castle), the drama will be released in 2025. Fans had hoped for a modern family-esque look at modern family life (like the American version), but if this synopsis can be believed, it sounds quite different.

Compared to Modern Family’s family-centric mockumentary style, this show follows a flight attendant with a vibrant sex life who conceals her history from her staunch Republican husband.

Many fans and readers have been understandably puzzled and frustrated throughout Villain’s Country, as the premise of the original has nothing to do with Villian appearing in it.

On X (formerly Twitter) and online forums, producers are accused of false advertising, with some asking why this will even be called a remake in the first place.

“Modern Family is getting remade, but seriously, what on earth are they thinking with a plot like this??” one user posted.

Some speculated whether the “remake” label was just a marketing tactic and that any series with this title would be nothing like the American hit.

Modern Family fans ripped into the concept, claiming that the charm of the original series — multiple family types and a comedic build-up to a unique ending — has been diluted for an entirely different plot line.

“‘as a remake, and they don’t even have to say it as a remake,’ one netizen said, and another user criticized the production strategy that ‘Uboing (why is budaya ‘Modern Family’ in this)'”

As the backlash to the drama grows, the show has not yet offered any response.
