Netflix’s new series “When Life Gives You Tangerines” was released on March 7. Set in 1960s Jeju, it tells the four-season-spanning life story of rebellious yet charming Ae-sun (IU) and the kind-hearted but naive Gwan-sik (Park Bo-gum). The screenplay was written by Lim Sang-choon, known for “When the Camellia Blooms” and “Fight for My Way”, while Kim Won-seok, the director behind “My Mister”, “Signal” and “Misaeng”, took the helm.

The first act (Episodes 1~4, Spring) was released on March 7, followed by the second act (Episodes 5~8, Summer) on March 14. According to FlixPatrol, the drama ranked 5th worldwide on the day of its second-act release, following “Adolescence”, “Medusa”, “Running Point” and “Zero Day”.
Notably, it was the only Asian work to break into the global Top 10, achieving No.1 in multiple countries, including Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Taiwan. It also topped Netflix rankings in Bolivia and Peru, proving its strong appeal beyond Asia.
With ₩60 billion in production costs, “When Life Gives You Tangerines” is among the most expensive Korean dramas ever made. The drama resonates across genders, ages and nationalities, offering a perfect blend of humor and emotion. It has particularly captivated viewers in their 40s and 50s, with 40% of its audience aged 40 and above, surpassing its teenage (6.2%) and even young adult (22%) demographics.
Korean viewers are raving about the drama, flooding online communities with comments like, “The casting is insane. A masterpiece is born“, “I was bawling my eyes out watching this“, “Started watching during dinner… Couldn’t eat because I was crying so much“, “Gwan-sik alone makes me tear up“, “If this aired on TV, the ratings would be insane“, “Each episode is a gem” and “How am I supposed to wait another week?“
The drama will continue with Act 3 (Episodes 9~12, Fall) on March 21 and Act 4 (Episodes 13~16, Winter) on March 28.
