SBS Drama Awards 2024 will take place on December 21st at SBS Prism Tower in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Shin Dong-yeop, Kim Hye-yoon and Kim Ji-yeon will be the MCs of this event.
Among the three major broadcasting companies in Korea, nominations for SBS Drama Awards raise the highest anticipation from drama fans.
Except for “The Escape of the Seven”, which disappointed fans with sluggish performances, most of the projects released by SBS this year, from “Flex X Cop” to “Connection”, “Good Partner”, “The Judge from Hell” and “The Fiery Priest 2”, gained huge attention from the public.
Due to the success of SBS dramas, it is harder to tell which actors or projects will be awarded this year. Looking back at last year’s award ceremony, SBS Drama Award received criticism from viewers as it provided too many joint awards. There was more than one winner for Daesang and 7 winners for Best New Actor.
In particular, the highly-anticipated Daesang was supposed to honor the performance of the most impressive nominee, however, SBS gave the trophy to both Lee Je-hoon and Kim Tae-ri. This decision led to an unexpected scene of the two actors playing rock-paper-scissors to decide on the first person to give their acceptance speech.
Criticism worsened following the announcement of Best New Actor. Kang Yoo-seok, Kwon Ah-reum, Kim Do-hoon, Yang Hye-ji, Lee Shin-young, Lee Hong-nae and Jung Soo-bin were nominated for Best New Actor. Knowing the meaning of this precious award, which rookie actors can only receive once throughout their careers, fans were completely taken aback when all the nominees became winners. Aside from that reactions to the announcements of other categories, such as Best Actor, Best Drama, etc., were negative.
Due to the controversial event last year, many SBS fans are raising concerns over this year’s award ceremony. Nominees for Daesang at SBS Drama Award 2024 are “Connection” Ji Sung, “Good Partner” Jang Na-ra, “The Judge from Hell” Park Shin-hye and “The Fiery Priest 2” Kim Nam-gil. Attention is on whether SBS will regain its reputation as a prestigious drama award ceremony this year.
