According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, on December 29, at 9:03 AM (KST), Jeju Air flight 7C2216 from Bangkok to Muan International Airport attempted to land but collided with the outer wall of the runway. Of the 181 passengers on board, 179 lost their lives. In response, the government declared a national mourning period until midnight on January 4.

The Aviation and Railroad Accident Investigation Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, along with U.S. officials, is currently on-site at Muan International Airport, conducting inspections. The joint investigation team has partially examined the aircraft at the crash site and is focusing on the localizer, identified as a potential factor that exacerbated the accident. They are also investigating all related elements, including air traffic control communication, bird strikes, and aircraft defects.

The tragedy, which occurred on the cusp of the New Year, has cast a somber mood across the nation. The joint memorial altar set up to honor the victims continues to see a steady stream of visitors. Within the entertainment industry, figures such as Park Na Rae, DinDin, Im Si Wan, Jang Sung Kyu, Hong Hyun Hee & Jason, Kang Jae Joon & Lee Eun Hyung, Kim Bum Soo, and Shin Ah Young have stepped up to provide support and heartfelt condolences.

During the mourning period, broadcasters have canceled or postponed year-end award shows to express their deep sympathy. Many major variety programs have also joined in the tribute by suspending broadcasts.

On the final day of the national mourning period, January 4, major variety shows will continue to be canceled. MBC’s “Hangout with Yoo” will air a special episode instead, and, according to OSEN, KBS2’s “I’m A Singer” and JTBC’s “Knowing Bros” will also not air.

Notably, “I’m A Singer” will not only be preempted on January 4 but will also be postponed on January 11 due to the broadcast of the 2024 KBS Drama Awards, resulting in a two-week hiatus. “Knowing Bros” had planned to feature KBO League championship team KIA Tigers manager Lee Beom Ho, along with players Yang Hyeon Jong and Na Sung Bum, but the episode’s broadcast has been rescheduled to the following week.

From January 5, regular broadcasting schedules will resume. MBC will air the 2024 MBC Drama Awards at 5:10 PM (KST) while KBS2 will return with “Boss in the Mirror,” “2 Days & 1 Night Season 4,” “Iron Family,” “The DDANDDARA,” and “Gag Concert.” SBS will also resume regular programming with “Running Man” and “My Ugly Duckling.”
