Earlier this year, JTBC launched much excitement with the announcement of its survival show “Girls On Fire.” The program promised to form a powerful girl group and featured popular figures like comedian Jang Do Yeon as the MC, alongside judges such as Day6’s Young K and rapper Gaeko.
The stakes were high, with winners promised 200 million KRW (around $138,000 USD), an album release, a national concert tour, and a global showcase. The show’s contestants, ranging in age from 19 to 30, were chosen for their exceptional vocal talents.
However, after the show concluded, fans noticed 6 months of silence with no updates about the group’s debut. Concerns grew when Yang Irae, one of the winners, addressed the lack of communication in a video that circulated online, saying even the members had no news about their future plans.
On December 22, Yang Irae shared another update on TikTok, confirming the worst fears of fans: the group would not be debuting. She thanked supporters for their love and shared her plans to continue pursuing her music dreams, despite the setback.
Fans were heartbroken and expressed their frustration online. Comments ranged from sadness over the wasted effort of the contestants to anger at the company for leaving both the members and fans in the dark. Some said, “That’s so sad…The entire group was a powerhouse,” while others vented, “Was the company just going to keep us in the dark forever?”
As of now, JTBC has not released an official statement about the situation, leaving fans to wonder why the group’s debut was scrapped. Many continue to support the former contestants and hope they find success in other endeavors.
