On March 20, a topic titled “Billboard also cut off NewJeans. Here’s an article criticizing NewJeans” was published on the Korean forum Pann Nate, drawing discussion. The topic in question cited an article from Billboard Korea, which was titled “How NewJeans’ Rebrand as ‘NJZ’ Ended Up in the Courts — and Why the K-Pop Industry Is Speaking Out”.
In the article, Billboard Korea wrote that while NewJeans has requested to be referred to as NJZ, no legal ruling has been made on the matter, and their existing contract remains in place, adding that “NewJeans remains the more accurate name for now from a legal standpoint”.
The article also mentioned the 5 Korean music organizations that previously accused NewJeans’ movements of being a threat to the K-pop industry as a whole. It then included how NewJeans’ claims are still one-sided, and how the lawsuit that determines the validity of the girl group’s contract with ADOR is still pending.
“In this context, foreign media that present NewJeans’ perspective without providing balanced coverage of the ongoing legal dispute runs the risk of spreading misinformation. NewJeans and ADOR are still deeply conflicted and in a tense standoff”, it also added.
Responding to this article, netizens seem to have conflicting opinions about NewJeans’ rebrand, with some defending the girl group, saying, “If it’s a warning about the K-pop industry, shouldn’t it be about that company rather than NewJeans? LOL. They’re the ones ruining K-pop.” Meanwhile, many insisted that NewJeans’ activities are still “properly carried out through ADOR”, so the rebrand may not actually be meaningful.
Several netizens, however, questioned the topic’s tone and accused them of worsening the content of Billboard’s article, leaving comments such as, “Billboard is being objective”, and “Billboard is just covering the events that transpired, how is that ‘cutting off’ NewJeans?”.
