Family by Choice Episode 9 brings the emotional separation of our beloved trio who finally leave their precious family to take on the responsibilities that await them. Leaving behind the home they love, loneliness fills Ju-won’s life as she begins to see the two drift away from them. Ten years pass by, and anger towards San-ha and Hae-jun fills Ju-won up when an unexpected reunion comes her way.
Family by Choice (조립식 가족) tells the story of a family formed by bonds of love rather than those of blood. Two fathers come together to care for their three children who share the bond of love as they grow up together. While life isn’t always smooth for the trio, and feelings of love make their way within them, the family is always ready to face everything together. Starring Hwang In-youp, Jung Chae-yeon, Bae Hyeon-seong, Seo Ji-hye, Choi Won-young, Choi Moo-sung, the drama is available to stream on Viki.
A quick recap of episode 9; San-ha and Hae-jun push forth their departure despite Ju-won’s refusal and with tears in their eyes, the two leave. Park Dal’s confession never happens as Hae-jun only takes her as his sister’s friend while Ju-won tries her best to make San-ha stay but he still leaves. Saddened by the lonely air that fills the house, Ju-won somehow tries to hold it in and keep herself connected with the two.
However, while the two can call or text her on her birthday for the next few years, the messages soon stop, and no more birthday wishes arrive. Ten years pass by in this way until one day Ju-won finds out that there is an intruder in her shop and soon arrives with him at the police station. Unable to see the intruder’s face, she awaits Jeong-jae and Dae-uk’s arrival.
The two fathers soon arrive and Jeong-jae begins hitting the intruder who soon reveals himself to be Hae-jun. Everyone is stunned by his sudden return and while the two fathers are happy, Ju-won refuses to acknowledge him. Meanwhile, San-ha also arrives at the police station after seeing the mess at Ju-won’s shop and once again shocks the fathers. However, Ju-won doesn’t acknowledge him either and treats the two as strangers. Later, everyone returns home and the two boys announce that they have returned for good this time. But Ju-won has other plans.

This episode was an emotional ride for fans as they see their beloved trio drifting apart. After weeks of seeing them together and happy, this was surely a hard turn for fans and we can say that Ju-won wasn’t the only one crying silent tears. The episode was centrally focused on the trio, however, the two fathers once again steal the spotlight with their performance.
Jeong-jae’s lonely back when saying goodbye to his sons was truly heartbreaking. But the way the two fathers cheered for Ju-won at every birthday of hers was heartwarming and the only stream of happiness that we felt in this episode. Also, the way the two open their arms when their sons return shows the warmth the two hold for their sons. They never closed their doors for the two and were always waiting for them to return. You can see this in the way they instantly welcome the two back.
Meanwhile, Ju-won’s anger towards the two is also justified as she too waited for them but their actions hurt her. This is a given as she felt that the two now have their own families and have forgotten about her despite the years she worked into creating this family. She defended this family for so long only to have them leave. Her anger is expected but her love is stronger and we know that she will forgive them soon.
