Kim Tae-ri’s 3 Years of Training Pay Off: “Jeong Nyeon” Sees Rising Ratings & Rave Reviews

Kim Tae-ri‘s efforts over 3 years of Pansori (traditional Korean opera) practice have paid off as “Jeong Nyeon”, a weekend drama on tvN, continues to rise in viewership. Writers Seo Ireh and Namon, who created the original webtoon, also shared their reactions to the drama’s success.

“Jeong Nyeon” is set in post-Korean War 1950s and follows the story of Yoon Jeong-nyeon, a “born musical prodigy,” as she navigates the challenges and triumphs of becoming the best gukgeuk (traditional Korean opera) actress. With its unique focus on “female gukgeuk,” strong performances, solid direction, and storytelling, the drama has received high praise since its debut.

Kim Tae-ri (as Yoon Jeong-nyeon), Shin Ye-eun (as Heo Yeong-seo), Ra Mi-ran (as Kang So-bok), Jung Eun-chae (as Moon Ok-kyung), and Kim Yoon-hye (as Seo Hye-rang) have been lauded for their exceptional acting. The vibrant portrayal of the 1950s, stunning mise-en-scène of the gukgeuk performances, and captivating traditional music have created a visually and aurally immersive experience.

In its second episode, “Jeong Nyeon” achieved a metropolitan household rating of 8.9%, with a peak of 10.0%, and a national household average of 8.2%, with a peak of 9.5% (according to Nielsen Korea, based on paid platforms). These figures represent nearly double the ratings of the 1st episode, with the drama breaking into double-digit viewership in just two episodes.

Moreover, “Jeong Nyeon” ranked first in TV-OTT drama buzz for the second week of October, according to Good Data Corporation.

Seo Ireh, the writer of the original webtoon, said, “It was moving to see ‘Jeong Nyeon’ come to life. The synchronization between the actors and their webtoon counterparts was impressive, but what really stood out was the sound and the acting. The in-drama gukgeuk scene in episode 1 felt like watching an actual gukgeuk performance, and Kim Tae-ri’s voice was incredible. Shin Ye-eun’s transformation into her mischievous character in episode 2 was also remarkable.”

Meanwhile, Namon, the illustrator, added, “I laughed and cried at the incredible acting and the unique chemistry of the drama. I’d love to invite everyone to the magical world of female gukgeuk. Please enjoy it together.”

Namon also gifted fan art of Jeong Nyeon from the drama, showing her deep affection for the show.

On the other hand, Episode 3 of “Jeong Nyeon” will air on October 19 at 9:20 p.m (KST).
