Lee Byung-hun Talks About Racism Experience In US & Thanks “Squid Game” For Raising His Profile

Season 2 of the Netflix series “Squid Game”, which caused a global syndrome in 2021, tells the fierce battle between Ki-hoon (Lee Jung-jae) and Frontman (Lee Byung-hun) after returning to the game. In Season 2, Frontman takes off his mask and participates in the game as contestant 001 named Oh Young-il, raising the tension of the drama.

Following the release of “Squid Game 2”, Lee Byung-hun, who played the Frontman, had an interview and shared his feelings about the series.

Regarding the good results of “Squid Game 2”, Lee Byung-hun said, “I believe that all the people who worked hard on this project would feel so rewarded seeing the positive responses from viewers. I do feel the same”. He added, “I once mentioned in an interview when visiting the US for ‘G.I.Joe’ that the ideal life as an actor, to me, is being recognized by people in certain places. I thought the same even after ‘Terminator’, but no one recognized me there. This time, I went to the US with a different feeling. Right before the release of ‘Squid Game 2’, I went there for several promotional events and even participated in a stadium event. I got to experience the enthusiasm of the fans that I had never felt with previous Hollywood projects. It once again made me realize how amazing this project is”.

Answering the question, “You entered Hollywood a long time ago, so is there any different feeling about visiting the US with Korean content?”, Lee Byung-hun said, “When doing other Hollywood projects, I thought the cheers I received were the loudest, but the cheer this time was actually the biggest one. It feels different coming here with a Korean project together with my Korean colleagues and receiving such a warm welcome. I feel so touched and overwhelmed. I’ve had many experiences with Hollywood projects, but ironically, this is the first time I’ve been welcomed this enthusiastically with a Korean drama”.

When asked about his experience of racism when entering Hollywood in the past and whether there has been any change in the way US viewers look at him after K-content became popular, the actor confessed, “There’s no big difference actually. What I felt in the past while working on Hollywood projects came from a very small number of people. Over that long period, it was only two or three individuals who made me feel that way, so I don’t think there’s been any major change. However, I could feel the enthusiastic reactions of people to Korean content, especially ‘Squid Game’, when visiting LA and New York. I think they’ve gotten to know more about Korea. Everyone greets me with ‘annyeonghaseyo’ now. It made me realize the power of content and I felt incredibly proud”.

Regarding his determination when deciding to appear in Season 2 of “Squid Game”, following Season 1, Lee Byung-hun shared, “Rather than thinking ‘I’ll show people what I got’, I actually thought ‘I hope there is a chance for me to show them my ability’. It is because I didn’t know what story I would be given by director Hwang Dong-hyuk. Participating in a big project with many main characters that created a global sensation like this, I naturally thought I needed to do my best. It’s okay to go with the flow, but if I were to make myself stand out too much, I could break the harmony of the series. I guess the director must have had a hard time maintaining the balance so that many actors could all be considered leads.”
