Song Kang-ho Apologizes for Describing Women’s Volleyball as “Cute”: “Poor Word Choice, Deeply Regretful”

On the morning of December 2, Song Kang-ho participated in an interview at a café in Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul ahead of the release of the film “One Win” (directed by Shin Yeon-sik).

Starting the interview, he addressed the controversy, “During an interview a few days ago, I chose the wrong word, and it seems many volleyball fans felt uncomfortable about it.

He explained, “I see volleyball as a sport with a powerful and wide-ranging spectrum. It naturally involves strong, powerful energy. What I meant to convey is that volleyball, in addition to its strength, offers a wide variety of entertainment through its detailed techniques, strong teamwork and intricate strategic plays, which make watching broadcasts endlessly enjoyable. However, I understand that volleyball fans felt upset and uncomfortable, and I deeply regret it.”

Song Kang-ho emphasized, “If my poor word choice caused discomfort, I sincerely apologize.”

The controversy stems from his remarks during a press conference and preview for “One Win” on November 28. He had stated, “Since it’s volleyball season these days, I watch volleyball broadcasts daily. Men’s volleyball is very attractive, but I enjoy women’s volleyball for its cuteness. It’s a sport that especially emphasizes teamwork.” His use of the word “cute” was criticized by volleyball fans as inappropriate.

Song Kang-ho plays the role of Kim Woo-jin, a volleyball coach who has never won a match, both in life and in his career.
