Recently, director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who is behind the success of “Squid Game”, had an interview where he discussed recent controversies surrounding the series.
In particular, when asked about criticisms regarding the casting of T.O.P, who had a drag scandal in the past, the director answered honestly that he “didn’t expect” criticisms towards T.O.P to continue.
Then, right after the release of “Squid Game 2”, a bizarre incident occurred. Park Sung-hoon, who played a transgender character, unexpectedly posted an explicit Japanese adult video (AV) cover on his social media. The image, which is basically the poster for a porn parody of “Squid Game”, where women were kidnapped, forced to play games, and raped when they lost, shocked not only Park’s fans but also director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
When asked if he felt upset about his painstakingly crafted work—achieved at the cost of losing 6 teeth—being turned into a parody AV, Hwang Dong-hyuk nodded gravely.
“It’s extremely upsetting. I heard that similar parody AVs were made overseas during ‘Squid Game 1’. Since they’re produced abroad, we can’t even stop them, which is really frustrating. It completely distorts the original meaning of the work”, the director stated.
He then commented on Park Sung-hoon’s scandal, saying, “I haven’t had a chance to talk to Park Sung-hoon yet, but I, too, want to understand why he posted something like that.”
Meanwhile, Park Sung-hoon’s agency originally released an apology and explanation for the controversy, but later admitted to false explanation in an additional statement.
Later on, the script reading session for Park Sung-hoon’s upcoming K-drama, “The Tyrant’s Chef” was cancelled, sparking speculations that this has to do with the actor’s scandal. However, his agency refuted such rumors.
