Despite featuring a powerhouse cast including Lee Dong Wook, Lee Da Hee, Lee Kwang Soo and Lee Joo Bin, tvN’s Monday-Tuesday drama “The Divorce Insurance” is already facing trouble with ratings plunging into the 2% range after just two episodes.
Premiering on March 31, “The Divorce Insurance” initially showed promise. According to Nielsen Korea, the first episode pulled in a nationwide average rating of 3.2%, peaking at 4.3%. In the Seoul metropolitan area, it climbed as high as 5.1%, taking the top spot in its time slot across cable and general programming channels.
However, the second episode, aired on April 1, saw a sharp decline. Ratings fell to a national average of 2.4%, dropping 0.8% from its premiere and raising concerns over the drama’s trajectory.
Directed by Lee Won Suk (Killing Romance) and written by Lee Tae Yoon (Secret Royal Inspector & Joy, The Undateables, Tamra, the Island), “The Divorce Insurance” was heavily promoted as a “comforting, feel-good drama — like a warm cup of milk tea“. Director Lee even expressed confidence in the cast and crew, saying it was designed to uplift viewers in difficult times. Unfortunately, early reception has been lukewarm at best.
The second episode delves deeper into the formation of the divorce insurance task force team. Jeon Na Rae (Lee Da Hee) officially joins the team, but internal divisions arise over the insurance’s core mission. Noh Ki Jun (Lee Dong Wook), along with Kang Han Deul (Lee Joo Bin), seeks insights from a monk — Ki Jun’s ex-wife — played by Jo Bo Ah. The team eventually secures conditional approval from executives and begins promotional efforts at a wedding expo. Tension also brews as it’s hinted Na Rae may have hidden motives for joining the project.
Following the broadcast, online reactions were mixed. Critics voiced disappointment, “tvN really needs to filter their production teams better. This is serious”, “With only 12 episodes, the first two are critical… this is frustrating”, “What’s the point of having such big-name actors if you waste them?” and “It’s the follow-up to ‘My Dearest Nemesis’, and the ratings are already halved.”
On the other hand, some viewers defended the drama, “I think it’s refreshing and fun! I’m enjoying it so far”, “The director always brings something unique — it’s worth sticking around” and “*Lee Dong Wook and Lee Kwang Soo together are hilarious. I’m sold!*”
With its ratings slump, “The Divorce Insurance” faces a critical turning point. Whether its unique premise and star-studded cast can turn things around remains to be seen.
