When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 10 Recap

The episode opens in the Bu household where Sang-gil is creating a drunk ruckus because of his daughter’s relationship with Eun-myeong. While his own sons are annoyed by his behaviour and hope for their stepmother to be free of the man, she persistently stays with him to see how it ends with him. But the relationship between Bu Hyeon-suk is something her brothers are not ready to support either as they warn her to stay away from him or else they will beat Eun-myeong up.

True to their words, they beat Eun-myeong every time he comes across them or their friends. With no choice in front of him, Eun-myeong tries to break up with Hyeon-suk but is moved when she asks him to run away with her. In Seoul, Geum-myeong comes face-to-face with her boyfriend Yeong-beom’s mother and is left angered when his mother looks down upon her. Frustrated, she tells Yeong-beom that she doesn’t want to marry his mother’s son but the person she loves, just like her mother once did.

The next day at work, she once again spots the woman who frequents the theatre and finds out that she is her colleague Park Cheong-seop’s mother. She offers her some movie tickets along with the owner before leading her into the theatre. Cheong-seop sees this and thanks Geum-myeong for what she has done for his mother. Soon, she bonds with Cheong-seop and his mother which leads to them having a better relationship.

Meanwhile, Ae-sun is worried for Geum-myeong when a particular dream leaves her restless. She calls Geum-myeong every now and then to keep an eye on her safety, her uncle recounts the time when her mother had similar instincts which in turn saved her life.

On the day of conducting their ancestral rites, a younger Ae-sun wandered off after collecting wood behind a black dragonfly. However, she came across a woman who asked her for help getting some change for her bus travel. Ae-sun helped her but when she asked her the same again, Ae-sun was unaware of the hidden danger she was being led to. Luckily, her mother arrived on time and saved her from child traffickers, and later even found the culprits who were then beaten to death in the market.

Finding out about this, Ae-sun is all the more worried for her daughter and calls her again in the night. Later, she sees the dream again in which she goes back to the day of her younger son’s death and how she wishes to go back and change her steps to first consoling her child before going to find Geum-myeong.

The next day, Ae-sun arrives in Seoul to meet her daughter but finds her unconscious in her bed. Turns out, her instincts were right as Geum-myeong was unconscious due to inhaling carbon monoxide gas which was a major cause of death during the time. Remembering the scene of her son’s death, Ae-sun gathers her strength and screams for help. Cheong-seop is also there at the house and helps her rush Geum-myeong to the hospital.

When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 10 Review

There is a reason why this show is among the top Korean dramas at the moment as it continues to cover more heart-touching themes with yet another wonderful episode. I love the way it smoothly progresses from love troubles to showing the power of a mother, without any sudden rush into it. The progression of this show is truly unlike any other and I love all the themes that it is capturing for us all.

Coming to the episode, in the first half we see the Yang siblings indirectly looking for a love like their parents in their lives. Be it Hyeon-suk’s idea of running away that makes Eun-myeong rethink their break-up or Geum-myeong hoping to see a man like her father in Yeong-beom who would stand up for her. The two have surely heard a lot about their love story and are in some way looking for something like that for themselves.

And then moving on from there, the episode dives into the wonderment that mothers truly are. Just like her mother once told her, Ae-sun truly became a mother with eyes on her back as she continued to keep her daughter safe no matter what. Be it when she was a young girl or a grown-up woman, she always has her eyes on her daughter and knows when things are going bad for her.

These ideas have truly added another layer of amazement that I hold for this show and make me fall in love with the Korean drama all over again.
