Last week, we found out what was happening to all the different characters in Disney+ K-drama Light Shop, with all of these people either dead or comatose and waiting for a chance to pass to the afterlife after completing the things that are keeping them tied to this world. Heartbreaking and twisted, the last two episodes tie all the stories together with the tragic thread of fate and give us some tales which aren’t scary but filled with sadness and despair.

Light Shop Episode 7 Recap

The episode opens with Detective Sung-sik asking Won-young about the light shop and the latter tells him a story – his own. We are transported to the aftermath of an earthquake where Won-young is trying to get his child out from under the rubble. Unfortunately, he isn’t able to save her and in the last few moments, his daughter takes some candy lying about (the one that he previously offered to Hyun-ju) and feeds it to him in order to comfort him. In a heartbreaking turn of events, he leaves her under the rubble and crawls out, promising to come find her soon.

We then see Won-young stumbling around the lanes of the neighbourhood near the light shop and eventually walks into the brightly lit store. A woman is now the head of the place and Won-young pleads with her to help rescue his daughter but she tells him that it’s too late and refuses to help him. In a fit of rage, he tries to break one of the lamps, but the shop owner stops him with her powers and he eventually realises the purpose of the shop and the lights.

Unfortunately, he also realises that it was him who died in the earthquake and that his daughter is still alive and alone under the rubble. The realisation makes him break down in tears and after mourning everything that he has lost, he asks Seor-yeong what he is doing at the shop. She asks him to accept everything that has happened so that he can move on. However, he asks her to give him his daughter’s light but Seor-yeong informs him that she has to find her own light herself. He retaliates by saying that since his daughter is pinned, she cannot get here but the strict owner refuses to budge.

He asks her what he can do to help her because he can go to any lengths for his daughter and Seor-yeong makes a deal with him. We are then brought back to the present where the detective continues to ask Won-young questions. The latter, however, doesn’t give him any straight answers which frustrates him thoroughly. After some back and forth, however, Won-young tells him that he is in the afterlife.

Elsewhere, Young-ji gives the new recruit at the hospital a rundown of what to do. As she narrates a rather heartbreaking story of a service dog who kept his owner alive, we see Kang Byeong-jin running after a barking dog that kept him up at night in the cold, only to realise that it was his dog that had been keeping him alive all this while. Young-ji gives a rundown of the patients that they are taking care of while all the characters live their last few precious moments with those who matter the most to them.

As the 3 days start to close in, the wandering souls start to come to terms with their heartbreaking situations including Sung-sik, who realises what he is doing here. However, when Won-young brings up his child, Sung-sik breaks down in tears thinking back to the loss of his baby. Meanwhile, Seung-won helps carry Ji-woong through the alley when the latter tells him that there is a woman in a nearby house saying that she is locked inside. The two of them decide to get her out of the house.

At the light shop, Won-young explains to Sung-sik that those who wish to return cannot forge any relationships because then they will be stuck between time and space. To this, Sung-sik tells him how he constantly ended up at the light shop after following the sounds of a scooter. Upon inspection, he tells Won-young that he has some business with the scooter person face to face. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Byeong-jin wakes up from his coma thanks to his dog while Seung-won encourages Ji-woong to find his light after dropping him off at the light shop before apologising to him profusely.

Eventually, Ji-woong is able to find his light in the shop and Won-young tells him that he hopes that they never meet again.

Light Shop Episode 7 Review

What a deep, thoughtful and heartbreaking episode this has been. While it is scary to wonder whether it is possible for souls to get lost while they are in a coma or before their funerals, it’s even more painful to wonder how lost and confused all of these people must be feeling as they find themselves in this random, dark place that they never seem to be able to get out of. There are many small, heartfelt moments in this episode that truly hit a nerve but the story about the dog brought me to tears. With the Light Shop finale here, this series is one that I will not be forgetting any time soon.
